In our St. Croix sheep operation we learned the hard way that in Middle Tennessee, a livestock guardian dog is a must.  We tried it all: donkeys, electric fencing, woven wire, and more. Nothing stopped our coyote problem except our first registered Great Pyrenees, Maggie. She sleeps with one eye open during the day, and at night she is on full alert. 

Our Great Pyrenees are working dogs and have been exposed to livestock from birth. We believe this is essential for ensuring a trusted livestock guardian. They are extremely docile and great with small children and adults. Our dogs make excellent pets, but they are bred to work and to be a guardian. Whether they are guarding the house, livestock, or their owners (once they are bonded), instinct kicks in at any potential danger and they will bark until the threat is cleared.
